Criminal Court has sentenced a man to prison over the abduction and assault of a minor at the tsunami monument area.

The incident occurred on September 1 last year, when a minor was reportedly taken to a vacant area near the tsunami monument in the early hours of the morning and assaulted.

Prosecutors charged two individuals in connection with the case: Ibrahim Naail, Villa Delight, V. Rakeedhoo, and Mohamed Ayaz, Fini Roalhi, R. Dhuvaafaru.

Naail faced charges of unlawful restraint and physical assault, while Ayaz was charged with unlawfully restraining a person without consent over prolonged period.

The case against Ayaz remains ongoing in court. However, proceedings against Naail have concluded. Last week, the court found Naail guilty of unlawful restraint and sentenced him to seven months and six days in prison. He was also convicted of assault and given an additional sentence of one month and six days.

Naail confessed to the charges during the trial. As a result of his admission of guilt, the cases were handled through fast-track proceedings. The cases were presided over by Judge Ali Nadeem at the Criminal Court.
