Male' City Mayor Adam Azim has firmly rejected the perception that development in the Villimale' ward is limited to election-season mobilization. Addressing concerns during a campaign visit, Azim highlighted a two-year track record of consistent urban renewal projects. He pointed to the resolution of chronic infrastructure failures, such as major garbage accumulation and road drainage issues, as proof of long-term planning. By prioritizing environmental restoration, the installation of public amenities, and systematic road maintenance, the administration aims to transform the ward into a greener, more accessible space, framing these accomplishments as continuous efforts rather than politically motivated initiatives.
Mayor of Male' City Adam Azim says Villimale’ has seen major, sustained development over the past two years, rejecting the notion that the ward is only prioritised during election seasons.
Azim said the past two years have been a period in which numerous issues were identified and addressed in practice, bringing Villimale’ in line with the structural and social progress seen in Male' and Hulhumale'. Interestingly, he made this statement as he and his party members conducted a door to door campaign in Villimale' in preparation for the upcoming Local Council Elections.
“Villimale’ is not a ward to be visited only during election season. It is one of the most beautiful places in the Maldives,” he said.
Among the key works he highlighted were the removal of a massive garbage pile, previously stacked to the height of a two‑storey building, in the industrial area, and the resolution of long‑standing road‑junction issues that had remained unresolved through “three or four mayors and councils.” He added that road repairs are ongoing.
Azim said several closed and landfilled areas have been opened, cleaned and replanted with trees, including indigenous species. Prayer spaces and seating areas have also been established along the beach.

He noted that additional facilities are in progress, including a skate park and public toilets in the diving and water sports area.
According to the mayor, extensive work has already been carried out this year as part of efforts to make Villimale’ a greener and more comfortable ward from January 2024 onward. These include:
Opening of a Quran class in Villimale’
Clearing and beautifying all previously closed or landlocked plots
Cleaning all road drains
Allocating land for a petrol shed
Planting more than 70 fruit trees, including Java apple, guava, mango, Java plum and breadfruit
Removing unused fire hydrants that obstructed pedestrians and expanded road space
Assessing the eroding areas of Villimale’
Construction of three parks
Coral planting in the Villimale’ reef in collaboration with associations
Opening a prayer space on Villimale’ Beach
Installing benches along the beach
Azim concluded by assuring residents that the council will continue working to make Villimale’ a more convenient, green and livable part of the city.
