Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) has fined one tenant and issued written reprimands against three others for subleasing flats issued under the social housing scheme ‘Gedhoruveriya’.

A spokesperson from FDC told Sun on Thursday that they have noticed that some of the housing units, located in Hulhumale’ Phase II, were being subleased in violation of regulations.

The corporation said that it fined one individual and issued written warnings to three others in May over such incidents.

The corporation added that two more similar cases remained under investigation.

Back in February, FDC fined a tenant by MVR 50,000 after it was discovered that one of the units had been subleased for use as labor quarters for migrant workers.

The corporation also imposed MVR 8,000 fines on two individuals for dumping waste at the towers.

Advertisements marketing ‘Gedhoruveriya’ flats for sublease had begun popping up even before the handover was complete. This prompted FDC warn that subleased units would be confiscated.

Back in March, Housing Minister Dr. Abdulla Muthalib said authorities would stop the sublease of social housing flats, even if it required changes to the law.

However, no such legislation has been submitted to the Parliament.

The issue of sublease of social housing flats is not limited to ‘Gedhoruveriya’ flats, but also other projects, including the Hiyaa flats.
