Maldives Development Alliance (MDA)’s President, Meedhoo MP Ahmed Siyam Mohamed has called for stronger measures to safeguard the environment and their stricter enforcement.
In a message on the occasion World Environment Day, Siyam conveyed his greetings and described the occasion as an opportunity to reflect deeply on the ecosystems that surround us and draw important lessons from them. He emphasized that the environment serves as the foundation of human well-being and prosperity.
Siyam stressed that any form of negligence in environmental protection is unacceptable, noting with concern that the harmful consequences of human activities on the environment are becoming increasingly evident.
In this regard, he highlighted a number of recurring environmentally harmful practices, including disposal of waste into the ocean, removal of sand and coral stones from beaches, cutting down trees along the shoreline, and activities that damage coral reefs and marine habitats.
As such, Siyam urged all citizens to protect these natural resources. He called on individuals to refrain from activities that harm the environment and to make environmental preservation a personal priority.
"It is my sincere prayer that more effective measures are taken at a national level to protect the environment and that the relevant authorities ensure the full enforcement of these measures," Siyam said.
He concluded his message by praying for the Maldives to be spared from environmental disasters and for the nation to be blessed with a clean and healthy environment.
Siyam’s appeal comes at a time when environmentally harmful activities continue to be reported across the country. Recently, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) also raised concerns over complaints alleging that environmental safeguards are being overlooked in several development projects underway across the Maldives.
