V. Thinadhoo Council President Shujau Ali has been suspended for allegedly switching political parties.

Sun has learned that the Local Government Authority (LGA) has formally notified Shujau of his suspension, citing his switch to Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) despite his election to the post on The Democrats’ ticket. Accordingly, Shujau has been instructed to refrain from his duties pending a final determination by the LGA Board on the matter.

The development follows the recent dissolution of The Democrats, the political party spearheaded by former President Mohamed Nasheed following his departure from MDP, after its membership fell below the statutory minimum requirement of 3,000 members.

Before the dissolution of The Democrats, a significant number of its members, including Nasheed, rejoined the MDP. It is likely Shujau returned to the MDP following The Democrats’ dissolution.
