Meekail accepts defeat, congratulates Nasheed: Will work to ensure MDP wins 2028

South Galolhu MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem has congratulated former president Mohamed Nasheed on his landslide victory in the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) chairperson election.

Via a post on X, Meekail said he had contacted Nasheed via telephone to offer his congratulations on the landmark victory. He further emphasized his commitment to ensure unity within MDP and working with renewed determination to ensure the party's success in the 2028 elections. Meekail also reaffirmed his dedication to standing alongside the party’s general membership.

އިރުކޮޅެއް ކުރިން ރައީސް ނަޝީދަށް ފޯނުކޮށް، އެމަނިކުފާނަު ހޯއްދެވި ފުރިހަމަ ކާމިޔާބަށް މަރުހަބާ ދެންނެވިން. އަދި އެމްޑީޕީ އެކަތިގަނޑެއްގެ ގޮތުގާ ބާއްވާ 2028 މި ޕާޓީއަށް ކާމިޔާބުކޮށްދިނުމަށް އާ އަޒުމެއްގައި މަސައްކަތްކުރާނަން! ޕާޓީގެ އާންމު މެންބަރުންނާއި އެކު ދެމިހުންނާނަން!

The election which kicked off at 14:30pm, concluded after 21:00pm tonight. Preliminary results available so far place Nasheed in the lead.

The election was widely viewed as a contest between the MDP’s two internal factions. With Nasheed prevailing in the first major internal election since rejoining the MDP after leaving to form 'The Democrats,' the balance of power within the party has shifted once again.
