A motion has been submitted to the Parliament seeking to summon Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr. Abdulla Muththalib, to answer questions concerning stalled water and sewerage projects across several islands in the Maldives.

The request was filed under Article 83 of the Parliament’s orders by opposition MDP’s North Galolhu MP Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudoo) on Monday.

He is seeking comprehensive details regarding the stalled water and sewerage projects. In particular, the lawmkaer has requested clarification on the islands affected by the delays, the anticipated timelines for the resumption of work, and the projected completion dates for each project.

Kudoo also expressed concern over the Minister’s failure to provide satisfactory responses to questions he had submitted earlier.

Lawmakers have the authority to question cabinet ministers

\as a key mechanism for ensuring government accountability. With essential utility projects remaining suspended in numerous islands, concerns continue to be raised by both parliamentary representatives and residents of the affected communities.

As these projects are closely tied to island development and the provision of basic services that directly impact citizens’ quality of life, the Minister’s responses before Parliament are expected to attract significant public interest.

While concerns have been raised regarding the suspension of several projects initiated under the previous administration, the current government has previously maintained that delays affecting water and sewerage projects in certain islands stem from a lack of cooperation from opposition-controlled local councils.
