A man has been sentenced to prison after offering a bribe to police officers who stopped him for acting suspiciously in H.Dh. Nolhivaram.
The case concerns an incident that took place in March. The state charged Ahmed Ziran of Gulbakaage, Nolhivaram, with offering a bribe to two police officers who were patrolling the island.
According to the Nolhivaram Magistrate Court report, Ziran disembarked from a speedboat that arrived on the island on the evening of March 4, and officers found his behaviour suspicious. Police saw him discard items he had been carrying.
When questioned, he admitted the items were drugs and offered to pay the officers if they would throw them into the sea for him. The prosecution subsequently charged him with offering a bribe.
At trial, the defendant pleaded guilty and requested the minimum sentence. Following the guilty plea, the case proceeded under the expedited process.
Ziran was sentenced to two years, four months and 24 days in jail. After deducting the 15 days he spent in remand during the investigation, he will serve two years, four months and nine days. The verdict was delivered on Monday.
