Abdulla Shahid, the president of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), slammed President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration on Monday, warning that it is historically proven that weaponizing jobs for political gain will not win the people’s love.
The remark by Shahid, made in a post on X on Monday afternoon, came amid allegations that people employed at government offices and companies were getting penalized and even fired for getting involved in opposition political activities.
“It is historically proven that distributing jobs and firing people from their jobs will not win the love of the people,” he wrote.
Shahid stressed that each and every person getting fired has a family.
“The leaders of the incumbent administration must understand when they dismiss people from their jobs for political gain and prioritize cruelty that each and every single one of these individuals have a family,” he wrote.
“The oppressors must understand that the outcome of their oppression will be bitter.”

The MDP alleges that over 80 people have been fired from government offices, state institutions, and state-owned enterprises for engaging in opposition political activities.
The party held a mass protest in Male’ City on Thursday, titled ‘Job Thursday’, over the alleged suspension and termination of government employees. The party has previously stated that it is providing legal aid to government employees who are unfairly dismissed for exercising their political rights, and had helped lodge over 60 cases with the Employment Tribunal.
The allegations of unfair dismissals are denied by President Muizzu’s administration.
