ADK asks public to wear masks when visiting hospital as flu and respiratory illnesses increase in Male'

ADK Hospital on Thursday urged people to wear masks when visiting the hospital, citing an increase in measles, flu and other respiratory illnesses reported in Male' City.

The hospital said mask‑wearing is an important step to protect both patients and staff, and helps reduce the risk of transmitting illnesses within clinical settings.

Individuals experiencing flu symptoms or a rash accompanied by cough are advised to contact the hospital before arriving in person. Those with such symptoms are requested to call 1440 or the hospital hotline 7671440 for guidance.

ADK noted that this precautionary measure is intended to prevent the spread of illnesses to vulnerable patients receiving care at the hospital.

According to the latest figures released by the Health Protection Agency (HPA), the total number of measles cases confirmed in Male' has risen to 66, of which 13 remain active.

Most of the confirmed cases are individuals above 18 years of age, and 258 contacts have been identified so far.

Authorities continue efforts to curb further transmission. Under the ongoing vaccination campaign, 2,048 people who had incomplete vaccination and 1,118 frontline health workers have now been vaccinated. In addition, the Government of India has donated 20,000 doses of flu vaccine and three tonnes of medical supplies to support Maldives’ response efforts.

Measles is caused by the measles virus and spreads easily through coughing and sneezing. Other respiratory illnesses currently circulating include evolving coronavirus strains, influenza, and the common cold. Dengue, which is seasonal during the monsoon transition, is also being monitored.
