Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB), Soneva Namoona and the R. Fainu Council have successfully completed a special project to establish a sustainable waste-management system on the island.

The project was carried out following Fainu’s interest in adopting the Namoona Sustainable Waste Management Model, already implemented in several islands across the country. It was designed to lay a strong foundation for long-term waste management, combining financial support from MIB with the technical expertise of Soneva Namoona.

The programme included a seven-day waste audit, a Namoona Change Maker workshop, and the development of a Fainu-specific waste-management plan. More than 50 people, including waste-management staff and residents, received training through the initiative.

In addition, home composting kits were donated to 25 households under the Kaadhu Satheyka programme, aimed at reducing household food waste and encouraging community-level composting.

One of the key achievements of the project is the integration of Soneva’s model into Fainu’s waste-management plan, alongside the cessation of plastic burning on the island. Authorities have also committed to fully phasing out transparent waste burning.

The first phase of the project has now been completed, and follow-up assessments are underway to evaluate the long-term benefits of the system for the island community.
