The Maradhoo Magistrate’s Court has ordered the closure of a residence in Maradhoo after police alleged the property was being used to provide drug-related services in Addu City.
The court ordered the closure of Boalhadhanduge for 90 days, effective from Monday. Police said the order was issued under the Narcotics Act, marking the first time the Maradhoo Magistrate’s Court has ordered the shutdown of a drug service establishment.
Police reminded the public that entering or exiting a court-closed property without authorization is a criminal offense, and warned that legal action will be taken against anyone who unlawfully enters or damages the premises during the closure period.
Police also thanked the public for their cooperation in efforts to curb drug trafficking in Addu City. The agency said it will continue operations under the powers granted by the Narcotics Act, including identifying and shutting down additional locations used for drug trafficking and drug use.
Earlier, the Hithadhoo Magistrate’s Court had ordered the closure of two houses, while the Fuvahmulah Magistrate’s Court had also issued an order to close a suspected drug cafe' in Fuvahmulah.
The government recently amended the Drugs Act to address what officials describe as one of the country’s most serious social issues. The revised law, which came into force this year, allows for the death penalty for importing certain types of drugs in quantities exceeding specified thresholds.
