Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has warned the public against the use of unauthorized food products marketed as weight-loss products or cures for various diseases.
In a statement on Thursday morning, the MFDA said it has observed a rise in advertisements on various platforms marketing various products as weight-loss solutions or cures for diseases.
“Marketing such products using unproven information that is not backed by scientific research has the potential to mislead the people who use these products and harm their health,” warned the MFDA, adding that the risk is especially high for people on medication for chronic diseases, as well as pregnant or breastfeeding women.
The MFDA stressed that information published on various platforms promoting food products fall under “advertisements” under the authority’s regulations on marketing food products.
“Advertising food as products that can derive specific health benefits or treatment for specific diseases is prohibited,” warned the authority.
“At the same time, advertising using false or misleading information to imply food products are of a specific standard or have specific attributes is also prohibited under these regulations.”
The MFDA urged people to adhere to regulations when advertising food products.
“And, instead of using food products involving unproven claims, we urge people to adopt a balanced diet, cut down on salt and sugar and exercise regularly in order to be healthy,” added the authority.
