Nasheed says this is the first time he was not invited to an Independence Day celebration

Former president Mohamed Nasheed said on Sunday that this was the first time he had not been invited to an Independence Day celebration. 

In a post on X, Nasheed said he had always received an invitation to the Independence Day rally since his school days, including during periods when he was in jail. 

The Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage could not be reached for comment.

Maldives marked its 61st Independence Day on Sunday. Former presidents are typically invited to the official celebrations. 

This year’s programme included an official ceremony in the morning, followed by laughter and sports activities in the evening. A five-minute fireworks display was also held to mark the occasion.
