Maldives seeks access to emergency credit line from OPEC Fund

Finance Minister Hassan Zaeer has raised the possibility of establishing an emergency line of credit facility for the Maldives at the OPEC Fund for International Development.

The discussions took place in a meeting between Zareer and OPEC Fund president Dr. Abdulhamid Alkhalifa on the sidelines of the 2026 Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank annual meeting in Doha, Qatar.

The discussions between Zareer and Alkhalifa covered potential areas of collaboration under the country partnership framework signed between Maldives and OPEC Fund back in January.

According to the Finance Ministry, the two sides engaged in discussions regarding the importance of establishing an emergency line of credit facility, alongside future engagements in high-impact areas such as water and sanitation, harbor and ports development to support sustainable development in the Maldives.

The OPEC Fund has invested over USD 440 million in projects in the Maldives since 1977.
