STELCO has held discussions with the Addu International Airport Company (AIA) to further strengthen the electricity grid at Gan International Airport.

The airport was previously supplied with electricity by Fenaka Corporation, before STELCO officially took over power services in Addu City on Wednesday.

STELCO Managing Director Dr. Ali Azwar and senior company officials met AIA representatives on Thursday as part of their visit to Addu City. According to STELCO, the meeting focused on the Gan Airport upgradation project and the additional electricity required to support the airport’s expansion plans. The two sides also identified key operational needs and discussed ways to reinforce and consolidate the airport’s electricity network.

Gan International Airport currently handles limited international traffic, with SriLankan Airlines operating the most regular flights. A major development project for the airport was inaugurated in 2023 under the previous administration. The USD 27 million project was awarded to India’s Renaatus under a loan from the Exim Bank of India, and aims to expand the airport’s capacity to serve 1.5 million tourists annually.

However, the project has faced delays for various reasons, leaving the airport under-optimized and limiting its contribution to state revenue.
