The appeal case of Hussain Shifau, who received a 109-year prison sentence and a MVR 7 million fine, is set to begin at the High Court on Wednesday.

Shifau was convicted on 23 charges and sentenced to 109 years in jail by the Criminal Court on December 18 last year. He subsequently appealed the verdict, and the High Court accepted the case for review.

The appeal hearings are scheduled to commence on Wednesday. Shifau is currently under house arrest for medical treatment. Home Minister Ali Ihusaan told reporters at the President’s Office that he was transferred home for one month under provisions of the Prisons Act, which allow temporary release when required medical care cannot be provided in prison. The period may be extended depending on his condition.

In the fake TT case, Shifau was convicted of importing goods worth more than USD 123,000 (approximately MVR 1.9 million) by sending forged telegraphic transfers to foreign companies through his business, Kingdom of Fruits.

While the case was ongoing in court, Shifau was appointed Senior Political Director at the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare. However, once the appointment drew public attention, he was dismissed.
