Fisherwomen are also eligible to apply for this year’s fishermen's awards, with the Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Marine Resources opening nominations for the 46th Fishermen’s Day Special Awards.

The awards will be presented across four categories at the official Fishermen’s Day ceremony to be held in Male’ city.

Unlike previous years, the Ministry has introduced a service-recognition category specifically for women who are practically engaged in income-generating fishing, acknowledging their long-standing contributions to the sector.

The four categories this year include:

  • A category recognising young fisherwoman under 35 who are actively engaged in fishing and have no other source of income.
  • A category recognising experienced fisherwoman over 35 who continue to work in fishing as their sole livelihood.
  • A category for individuals whose primary income is derived from reef-fishing and related work.
  • A category recognising women who are practically involved in fishing and earn their income directly from fishing activities.

Nominations are open to individuals as well as third-party submissions. Application forms may be downloaded from the Ministry’s website, and completed forms must be submitted via email before 2pm on the 19th of this month. Further information is available through the Ministry’s hotline at 3322625.

The Fishermen’s Award is a prestigious national honour presented annually on December 10, recognising fishermen, fishing boat captains, vessels and companies that make valuable contributions to the Maldivian fisheries sector. Self-nominations and nominations from others are accepted.
