A man arrested on suspicion of involvement in the armed robbery of his own family told the Criminal Court on Saturday that the crime was perpetrated by a group of individuals who he met via an online game, and that he himself was victimized by them.
Zahir Ali Didi, 44, HA. Hoarafushi, was arrested by police on suspicion of intimidation, unlawful restraint, and robbery.
The case involves Zahir’s family, who were robbed of a large amount of money at knife-point at their home.
At his remand hearing on Saturday, the investigative officer told the court they believe Zahir to be involved in the robbery.
The officer said that Zahir was seen with the perpetrators prior to the robbery, and that he even took them to his family home.
The officer also told the court that Zahir hadn’t returned home prior to his arrest, and that he had been with one of the people suspected of active involvement in the robbery when the person was arrested.
Meanwhile, Zahir told the court that he met the perpetrators through an online game. He also claimed that they restrained him and grabbed his house key before going to rob his family.
He claimed he had no involvement in the robbery.
The court decided there was adequate evidence against him, and remanded him in custody of the police for 15 days citing danger to the public.
His remand expires on October 25.
