Maldivian has announced plans to acquire two additional Airbus aircraft as part of its ongoing efforts to expand flight operations and enhance service quality.
Island Aviation Services Ltd., the operator of Maldivian, is seeking to lease two Airbus A220-300 aircraft on an operating-lease basis, according to an announcement made on Sunday.
The company stated that the decision aligns with its broader strategy to widen route networks and improve passenger experience. Suppliers have until 23:59 on October 28 to submit proposals, which must be sent via email as outlined in the request for proposals.
Under the current timeline, the first aircraft is expected to be delivered in the first quarter of next year, with the second scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of the following year.
Maldivian first announced plans to acquire Airbus aircraft on April 12 last year, followed by an acquisition announcement on February 6, 2025. The airline previously operated flights to China and South Africa using Airbus aircraft, though long-haul operations required transit stops due to aircraft limitations at the time.
Since then, Maldivian has strengthened its fleet with the addition of a widebody Airbus A330, delivered on January 6, 2025. The aircraft, capable of carrying 264 passengers, marked a significant step in the airline’s expansion into long-haul travel.
