A research conducted last year has found that mental health issues, including severe anxiety, are most prevalent among students in grades 10 to 12.

The research, conducted between January 1 and December 27 of last year, collected data from 418 students across nine regions of the Maldives, including the Malé area.

The primary objective of the study was to assess the psychological well-being of students.

The findings revealed a high prevalence of stress, anxiety, and sleep-related disorders among students, with these issues particularly prominent among those in grades 10 to 12.

According to the study, key factors contributing to these mental health issues include bullying, harassment, social isolation, and family-related issues. The research also highlighted academic pressure and societal stigma surrounding mental health as significant barriers preventing families from seeking the necessary professional support.

The study concluded that students’ mental well-being is closely linked to both their school environment and home life. Subsequently, it emphasized the urgent need for authorities to standardize training for school staff, establish systems for regular mental health screenings among students, and conduct comprehensive community awareness programs aimed at reducing the stigma associated with mental illness.
