The first nursery under the five million tree planting project was opened in S. Meedhoo on Thursday, marking the start of a nationwide rollout of 20 nurseries pledged under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s five-year greening program.
The nursery, which was signed for development this year with funding from the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, is located in Meedhoo and covers an area of 23,000 sqft. The Environment Ministry said the nursery will further expand the project at the atoll level and provide easy access to the trees needed by the islands in the region.
According to the ministry, work on the remaining 19 nurseries under the project is also progressing at a fast pace. In addition, the establishment of such nurseries in different atolls is described as an important step to protect the Maldives’ fragile environment for future generations.

When the project is completed, a total of 21 nurseries will be established in different parts of the country. These include the 55,000-sqft nursery being developed in Hulhumale' under the Chinese government’s free assistance. The nursery is expected to be completed and opened next year, the ministry said.
The President’s five million tree planting program has been well received, and 2.4 million trees have been planted so far in different parts of the country. The government’s main objective is to establish an environmentally friendly green environment and further strengthen national efforts to overcome climate change.
