Motorcyclist narrowly avoids impact as heavy rockbag falls from construction site in Male'

Screengrab from social media video shows the rockbag fallen onto Chaandhanee Magu.

A road user narrowly escaped unharmed after a rock bag fell from the top of a building under construction on Chaandhanee Magu in Male' City.

According to a video posted on social media, the sack, believed by some to weigh around 50 kilograms, plunged from the upper floors of the building and landed in the middle of the road. The footage shows the rockbag striking tree branches before crashing down while several motorcycles were passing through the area. The filter-unit rockbag fell just seconds after a motorcycle crossed the spot.

The video also shows another motorcycle braking abruptly as the sack hit the road, with the rider narrowly avoiding a direct impact.

As the video began circulating online, many people called for action against the construction company for failing to take adequate safety measures.

Concerns over unsafe construction practices in the congested capital have long been raised by the public. The country has witnessed several dangerous incidents linked to workplace safety lapses.

In December 2018, a five-year-old boy was killed when a cement sack fell from a construction site.

Many people are now urging authorities to enforce stronger safety protocols to prevent such incidents.
