Infrastructure Minister Dr. Abdullah Muthalib says the ministry expects to require more than MVR 58 billion to complete ongoing projects this year, and that no specific budget allocations have been set for individual projects.
Muthalib disclosed the figures in a written response to questions submitted by South Hulhumale' MP Dr. Ahmed Shamheed, who had asked for the total estimated cost of completing works initiated under the ministry and the amount allocated in this year’s budget for their implementation.
According to the minister, the estimated cost of completing the projects stands at MVR 58,831,473,267, approximately MVR 58.8 billion. He said the government is using a programme-budget approach this year, meaning individual projects do not have separate earmarked amounts.
“The budget for the projects is allocated by the Ministry of Finance in accordance with the plan. Therefore, the 2026 budget does not specify a specific amount for specific projects,” Muthalib said in his reply.
The opposition has raised concerns over the absence of exact funding lines for projects scheduled for completion this year, and the lack of project-specific allocations in the budget.
Responding to questions at the Ahaa Forum, the Finance Minister said 1,273 projects are currently underway. He added that funding required for these projects will be released immediately and is already set.
