The Maldives Correctional Service, on Monday, confirmed that the individual arrested last Friday on suspicion of involvement in large-scale alcohol trafficking in K. Maafushi is a former corrections officer who was dismissed from the service for misconduct.

The Police, on Monday, announced the arrest of a young man in Maafushi after he was allegedly found in possession of 42 bottles of alcohol. The suspect was identified by police as 23-year-old Nabeeh Abdul Rasheed, a native of HDh. Kulhudhuffushi.

Following the arrest, photographs showing the suspect dressed in a Maldives Correctional Service uniform began circulating on social media.

Responding to inquiries from Sun, the Correctional Service clarified that the individual is no longer employed by the institution. The service said he was dismissed approximately one and a half years ago following a disciplinary issue.

The Police stated that the 42 bottles of alcohol were seized during a court-authorized search of Nabeeh’s residence in Maafushi, conducted as part of a targeted operation.

The Police further confirmed that the court has remanded the suspect in custody for eight days.

The investigation into the case remains ongoing.
