Prolonged rain across the Maldives has caused extensive flooding in Kulhudhuffushi City, one of the country’s most populous islands, with floodwater intrusion reported at numerous homes and causing varying levels of damage.

Speaking to Sun about the situation, Kulhudhuffushi City Deputy Mayor Ahmed Abdulla said the council had received reports of flood damage affecting 140 houses so far.

The Deputy Mayor added that several businesses had also reported losses due to the adverse weather conditions.

Ahmed Abdulla explained that Kulhudhuffushi is prone to severe flooding during heavy rainfall. Inspections of the drainage system revealed a blockage in one area, prompting the deployment of six pumps to remove water from different parts of the city. He added that trenches had been dug in some areas to divert floodwaters into the sea.

In response to flooding affecting homes and businesses, the Kulhudhuffushi City Council has established a temporary hotline for residents to report incidents. The hotline can be reached at 6527211.
