A jawbone fragment was discovered on the beach of Th. Kandufushi, an uninhabited island, on Saturday.

According to police, a group of people that visited the island for camping found what appears to be a mandible lying on the shoreline.

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the bone belongs to a human or an animal, though the fragment appears human at first glance. Police said the matter is under investigation.

The last missing-person case reported in Thaa Atoll was in April last year, involving Ali Mushfiq Mohamed, who jumped into the sea during the fire incident aboard the “Holhudhoo Boat,” which was carrying goods to islands in Thaa and Laamu atoll. Despite extensive searches by MNDF across a wide area of the sea, he has not been found.

Police said it is too early to determine whether the jawbone has any connection to that case.
