The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), on Sunday night, said that 11 of the people relocated to temporary housing following a fire in Sh. Funadhoo belong to a single household.
The fire broke out at approximately 07:00am this morning and was extinguished several hours later.
In a social media post, the NDMA confirmed that 11 residents had been moved to temporary accommodation for five days. Images released by the authority show extensive damage, including burnt outdoor air conditioning units and walls heavily stained with smoke and soot.
In response to an inquiry by Sun, the NDMA clarified that although the house was not completely destroyed by the fire, the residents had to be relocated because the property remains uninhabitable until minor repairs are completed.
Funadhoo Council President Mohamed Adil told Sun that the residents were relocated mainly because the house's electrical system had been severely compromised. He added that electrical appliances and wiring inside the building had sustained extensive damage.
The incident has displaced a total of 33 people, Adil said, adding that they are currently staying in local guesthouses. He emphasized that the affected houses had not recorded major structural damage and could be occupied again once minor restoration work is completed.
