Two Bangladeshi nationals travelling from the Maldives have been arrested at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Bangladesh for allegedly attempting to smuggle gold worth approximately MVR 5 million concealed inside their bodies.

According to Bangladeshi news outlet New Age, the individuals were identified as Mohammad Sulaiman and Jobaid Ahmed. The seizure was made by the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) during an operation conducted on the evening of the 18th of this month.

The two suspects arrived in Bangladesh at 6:15 PM aboard US-Bangla Airlines flight BS338 from the Maldives. After customs officials became suspicious, they conducted a search and discovered 2.73 kilograms of gold. The report stated that the gold had been moulded into egg-shaped pieces and concealed inside their rectums.

Customs officials said three gold pellets were recovered from each passenger. The seized gold has an estimated market value of four crore Taka, equivalent to approximately MVR 4.9 million.

Authorities confirmed that the confiscated gold has been placed in secure storage. Legal proceedings have been initiated against the two passengers, who remain in custody.
