Authorities have opened registration for home-based food businesses.
The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has announced that it will conduct surveillance inspections of households that produce and sell food commercially, as part of efforts to strengthen compliance with national food-safety standards.
In a gazette notice published Tuesday, MFDA said the initiative aims to verify whether entities registered with the authority are adhering to the Standard of Practice in the Production and Sale of Food for Personal Consumption. The inspections will take place from November 5 to 20, during which MFDA inspectors will visit food-processing establishments and home-based producers registered under the regulation.
MFDA noted that households producing food for sale often face public scrutiny over hygiene conditions, especially when items prepared at home are later sold in shops. The authority said the upcoming inspections are an important step toward ensuring safer local food production and maintaining public confidence in home-made products.
MFDA, operating under the Ministry of Health, is responsible for enforcing national food and drug standards, overseeing registration of food businesses and home processors, and regulating the import and registration of medicines.
For inquiries, MFDA has asked the public to contact its hotline numbers 7603204 and 3034221.
