Supreme Court Justice Ali Rasheed has applied to retire at the end of this year, following a request from the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) for him to step down.

The JSC has not yet made a formal decision on his retirement application.

Justice Ali Rasheed has held several senior judicial posts prior to his appointment to the Supreme Court. He previously served as a judge at the Criminal Court, Chief Justice of the Civil Court, and as a judge at the Drug Court. He was appointed to the Supreme Court bench six years ago.

During his tenure, Ali Rasheed presided over the 2019 Criminal Court bench that sentenced former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to prison. His time on the Supreme Court has also included controversy, with the JSC filing misconduct charges against him while he was serving on the apex court.

His retirement marks the departure of one of the judiciary’s long-serving figures, whose career has spanned multiple courts and several high-profile cases.
