Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has called on the government to immediately halt the land allocation project in Rasmale' to Eagle Hills of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
In a post on social media, President Solih said the land was being allocated “permanently” and that the transaction would benefit only the company. He stressed that a fair business agreement should provide mutual benefit to both parties, whether a sale or a lease arrangement.
Solih noted that the 500 hectares of land being reclaimed at a cost of more than USD 700 million from the state budget is being handed over to Eagle Hills free of charge. He added that the company would also be required to purchase the 5,000 housing units it is expected to build, meaning the state receives no direct financial return from the arrangement.
“500 hectares of land is being excavated at a cost of more than USD 700 million. Eagle Hills is being given free of charge. The state receives no money,” he wrote.

The government maintains that allocating more than 500 hectares of land to the company for 99 years without rent will bring significant benefits to the country. However, Eagle Hills has stated that if the land is sold to another party before the lease expires, a new 99-year period will begin.
The commercial terms of the project were signed on September 21. Lawyer and former Kendhoo MP Ali Hussain has also raised concerns, saying that allocating land to foreigners while citizens are seeking housing undermines public hopes. The Supreme Court registrar has decided not to accept the petition filed by Ali Hussain on behalf of the movement he represented, to halt the project.
Meanwhile, the opposition MDP continues to express concern over the issue. The ruling party, which holds a parliamentary majority, has rejected both the emergency bill and resolution submitted on the matter.
