A scam involving the theft of MVR 63,000 and USD 21,000 from a Bank of Maldives (BML) account is under investigation, according to police.

The incident occurred after an unidentified caller contacted the victim on the 24th of last month, obtained an OTP code, and used it to gain access to the victim’s bank account before withdrawing the funds.

Police have arrested four suspects in connection with the case. They are:

  • Ibrahim Sharif (34), Golden Gate / Fuvahmulah;

  • Jinaah Ahmed (29), Matharesmaage / F. Feaali;

  • Ibrahim Muaz (38), Nazmu / F. Nilandhoo;

  • Ali Dhaain (21), Lilynight / L. Gan.

Three suspects were arrested on Wednesday, while the fourth was arrested on Thursday. All four were produced before court, which ordered 10 days’ remand for Jinaah Ahmed and 15 days’ remand for the remaining three suspects.

Police said the case is being investigated further.

Fraud cases have risen sharply in the Maldives in recent years, particularly scams carried out using technological means. On the 18th of last month, cybercrime cases had doubled compared to the first six months of last year. Police Commissioner Ahmed Mohamed had noted that the increase is largely due to public carelessness and a lack of awareness about cybercrime risks.
