Indian man arrested for theft while disguised in niqab

The Justice Building Annex in Hulhumale' which houses the Criminal Court and Drug Court: Indian man arrested for theft while disguised in niqab.

An Indian man has been arrested on Monday for theft while disguised in a niqab.

The suspect has been identified as 41-year-old Indian male, Shahul Yehaya Abdul Rajak. He is accused of theft.

According to the court order, the suspect was detained after sufficient preliminary evidence was presented in support of the allegations against him.

The police incident report stated that the suspect was seen wearing a niqab and carrying a bag. When approached by officers, he reportedly attempted to evade them by fleeing the scene.

The Criminal Court has ordered the suspect to be remanded in custody for seven days. The court justified the detention by citing a potential flight risk, noting that the suspect’s status as an Indian national raised the possibility that he could attempt to leave the country to avoid prosecution.

The remand period is scheduled to end on Monday, November 9th.

Theft-related offences have become increasingly prevalent in the Maldives. In October, an individual was sentenced to seven months in prison for making unauthorized withdrawals from a woman’s bank account.
