Teen group assault suspect asks for release from jail, says he’s a student

A teenager arrested on suspicion of involvement in a group assault in Male’ City asked the Criminal Court to be released from jail on Tuesday, citing that he’s a student.

The 18-year-old, a native of GA. Dhaandhoo, was presented before a judge at the Criminal Court on Tuesday for his remand hearing.

He is accused by police of being among a group of individuals who engaged in a fight in Majeedhee Magu, the main road of Male’ City.

The evidence against him includes the incident report of the responding police officers as well as CCTV footage, which the court deemed sufficient to warrant the allegation against him.

At the court, the defense asked for him to be released from jail, citing that he was a student and the allegation against him was “minor.”

However, the court denied the request, citing risk of danger to the community if he were released.

The court ordered for him to held at a remand jail for 12 days.

His remand is set to expire on November 15.

Court documents show that two other suspects involved in the assault fled the scene and are currently on the run.
