The Addu Equatorial Hospital issued a public advisory on Tuesday, warning of a rise in cases of dengue in Addu City.
Dengue is a viral infection transmitted to humans by infected Aedes mosquitoes, causing high fever, severe headache, muscle and joint pain, and rash.
In severe cases, dengue can be fatal.
Addu, home to the country’s largest residential population outside the capital Male’, has seen a rise in cases of dengue in recent weeks.
A spokesperson from the Health Protection Agency (HPA) told Sun that 51 cases of dengue was reported by the Addu Equatorial Hospital in January, and 48 more cases so far this February.
According to HPA, the cases are highest in the Hithadhoo and Feydhoo districts of the city.
The Addu Equatorial Hospital issued an advisory on Tuesday urging to public to take necessary precautions such as destroying mosquito breeding grounds, wearing long-sleeved clothes, using mosquito repellants, and keeping doors and windows closed during dawn and dusk.

Common symptoms of dengue:
Those with fever are advised to drink plenty of liquids, rest well, and refrain from taking any medication other than Paracetamol or Panadol.
They are also advised to seek the help of a medical professional if the fever persists for more than three days, and to seek immediate medical attention if they notice a significant reduction in urine output, extreme fatigue, or bleeding from any part of the body.
