On March 18, 2026, a significant fire broke out at the Prime Fertilizer warehouse in the Maafannu district of Male', located near the Thoiba Mosque. The blaze began around 21:30, triggering an immediate and coordinated response from MNDF, MACL firefighters, and the police. Given the presence of stored herbicides and hazardous chemicals, officials implemented urgent safety protocols. STELCO has proactively disconnected electricity services to adjacent residences to mitigate electrical hazards while fire suppression efforts continue. At this time, no confirmed reports regarding casualties have been released, and authorities remain focused on containing the site.
A fire broke out on Wednesday evening in a warehouse near Thoiba Mosque in the Maafannu ward of Male' city and power has been cut in nearby homes as firefighters battle the blaze.
The incident occurred at the Prime Fertilizer main godown, located in M. Kairu, a storage site for herbicides and chemicals. A source in the area told Sun the fire began at around 21:30.
MNDF and MACL firefighters as well as police officers are still working to extinguish the blaze.
STELCO has temporarily cut electricity to several nearby homes as a safety measure while emergency crews battle the fire.
