The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has initiated a vital recruitment drive for 107 drivers, marking a significant step toward the launch of the government-backed electric taxi service on April 2. This initiative is designed to modernize public transit in the Maldives by integrating clean energy solutions into daily urban mobility. By transitioning to a fleet powered entirely by electricity, the project aims to reduce carbon emissions and noise pollution, fostering a cleaner and more efficient transport landscape for the public. The hiring process, which requires specific licensing and experience, underscores the organization's commitment to professionalizing the taxi sector while simultaneously driving environmental sustainability across the nation. This operational shift represents a substantial investment in infrastructure and technology, positioning the service to meet the growing demand for convenient and eco-friendly travel options.

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) is recruiting 107 drivers for the government’s new electric taxi line, which is scheduled to launch on April 2.

According to MTCC’s announcement, drivers will be hired on one‑year contracts, with extensions based on performance. Applicants must hold a B1 or B2 category license, and priority will be given to those registered with the Ministry of Transport’s taxi driver registry.

Drivers will work eight hours a day, six days a week, but the announcement does not disclose salary details. It states that salaries and allowances will be paid according to prescribed rules.

Applications must be submitted via MTCC’s online portal before 3pm on Saturday. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed from Sunday to April 23.

MTCC previously announced plans to recruit 407 drivers last November, including 285 full‑time and 122 part‑time positions. A walk‑in interview was held in January, but salary details were not disclosed then either.

The company says it has now received 60 of the 150 electric vehicles planned for the service. The taxis will operate 24 hours a day via a dedicated app, which allows customers to track nearby vehicles. A hotline (1655) has also been set up for assistance and emergencies.

MTCC has opened registration for part‑time drivers, and says the service will use 100 percent electric vehicles to support environmentally friendly transport.
