Parents applying on behalf of people with disabilities will no longer be required to submit proof of guardianship when applying for flats, the Housing Ministry announced Saturday.

The option for parents to apply instead of the person with a disability was introduced on May 20 this year.

According to the ministry, parents who are registered with NSPA as guardians can now submit applications without providing additional documents to prove their status.

Government family housing previously had a separate category for people with disabilities, allowing them to apply for flats directly. The ministry later expanded the option to allow parents to submit the forms on their behalf.

This change is aimed at easing the process for those who face difficulties filling out the forms themselves, as well as applicants under the age of 18. Flats will be issued to those registered with NSPA as the guardian.

Housing Minister Dr. Abdulla Muthalib said in a post on X last April that the government is working to reform the conditions of the disability category.

The ministry said the amendment is intended to address the challenges faced by people with disabilities in securing housing, and that allowing parents to apply will bring significant relief to families.

The government has also granted special concessions to people with disabilities in calculating the required period of residence in Malé. The ministry noted that the residency requirement for eligibility has been reduced.
