Health Protection Agency (HPA) has reported a significant increase in dengue fever cases across several atolls in the Maldives.

According to statistical data released by the agency for May 2026, the number of reported dengue cases rose from 648 in April to 778 in May.

The HPA's statistics further indicate that, in addition to dengue, instances of viral fever have surged across all atolls except for Haa Alif and Gaafu Dhaalu. Common colds are also spreading in numerous atolls. Furthermore, the agency noted an increase in cases of diarrhea and vomiting in the Greater Male’ area, as well as in Baa, Kaafu, Alif Alif, Faafu, and Gnaviyani atolls.

The HPA has urged the public to exercise heightened vigilance and take preventive measures against mosquito-borne diseases like dengue. Recommendations include wearing clothing that covers the body and using mosquito repellent lotions or sprays. Additionally, it is advised to keep doors and windows closed during dawn and dusk, which are peak times for mosquito activity.

To prevent mosquito breeding, the HPA advised against discarding containers that can collect water in house premises or on the streets and emphasized the importance of cleaning areas where stagnant water may accumulate.

For those who fall ill, recommended home care includes getting plenty of rest and consuming nutritious fluids such as coconut water, oral rehydration salts (ORS), and soup.

While paracetamol can be used to manage fever, the HPA cautioned that medical advice should be sought promptly if a fever persists for more than three days or if the patient experiences severe weakness.
