The Rasfannu beach area, which was closed after oil washed ashore, has now been cleaned and reopened to the public.
Rasfannu was renovated and reopened on Friday, the 12th of this month, following a major upgrade project carried out by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) under the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure. The area had been closed since April 9 for renovation works.
However, the beach was closed again on Sunday evening after an oil spill caused the oil to enter the shoreline from the sea near Rasfannu. At the time, the Male' City Council urged the public to avoid the area until the contamination was cleared.

On Monday evening, the council announced that the beach had been fully cleaned and was once again open for public use.
Rasfannu is one of the most frequently used swimming areas in Male', but the beach has faced repeated closures over the years due to poor water circulation and issues linked to nearby sewerage and drainage systems.
