MPL’s deputy CEO Ziyath resigns mere months into job

Ibrahim Ziyath has resigned from his role as deputy CEO of Maldives Ports Limited (MPL).

MPL confirmed to Sun on Sunday morning that Ziyath had resigned “sometime back.”

However, the reason for the decision is unclear.

Ziyath was appointed as MPL’s deputy CEO on March 16. He was also appointed to the company’s board as an executive director. But on May 1, Ziyath was dismissed from the board, and replaced by newly appointed deputy CEO Mohamed Lamman.

Sun has learnt that Ziyath had resigned shortly after he was dismissed from the board.

Ziyath, who holds a Master’s degree in business administration, previously served as the CEO of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. He also worked for 15 years at the State Trading Organization (STO).

He is the brother of former auditor general Hassan Ziyath and former managing director of Maldives Marketing and Transport Company (MTCC) Abdulla Ziyath, the latter of whom was convicted of corruption and money laundering in one of the biggest graft cases in Maldivian history, but had his sentence commuted in 2023.

Ziyath had faced allegations of corruption of his own during his tenure at MTCC. He was investigated by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) over allegations of corruption in recruitment of expatriate workers for MTCC’s project sites. The corruption watchdog asked the Prosecutor General’s Office to file criminal charges against him in the case back in October 2021.

With Ziyath’s resignation, MPL still has three deputy CEOs; Lamman, Mohamed Mueen and Ali Hashim.
