Two injured as fire burns down speedboat at Hanimaadhoo harbor

Two people have sustained injuries of various degrees in a late-night fire on a speedboat docked in HDh. Hanimaadhoo harbor which saw the vessel completely destroyed.

According to the Maldives Police Service, the incident was reported at approximately 12:20am early Wednesday morning. The speedboat, on which the fire broke out, was destroyed beyond use in the incident.

The Police identified the injured individuals as the vessel's captain and a crew member. The crew member received treatment at Hanimaadhoo Health Centre and was later discharged. The captain, meanwhile, was initially treated in Hanimaadhoo before being transferred to Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital for further treatment.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Reports indicate that the blaze was brought under control through the combined efforts of police officers and members of the public who were present at the harbor when the incident occurred.

The incident comes amid a recent increase in fire-related emergencies across the Maldives. According to statistics recently released by the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), 12 fire incidents were reported nationwide over the past week alone.

Authorities continue to urge the public to remain vigilant, identify potential fire hazards, and take the necessary preventive measures to reduce the risk of similar incidents.
