Fenaka signs deal to transfer Addu and Fuvahmulah water services to MWSC

The framework agreement to transfer water and sewerage services in Addu City and Fuvahmulah City to the Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) was signed on Sunday.

MWSC Managing Director Hussain Fahumy signed the agreement on behalf of the company at a special ceremony held Sunday, while Fenaka Managing Director Mohamed Afeef Hassan signed on behalf of Fenaka.

Following the signing, MWSC MD Fahumy said the company will begin providing water and sewerage services in both Fuvahmulah and Addu City before October 13. He said the transition is part of efforts to reduce government expenditure and strengthen corporate governance, in line with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s vision.

Fenaka MD Afeef said both companies are working closely to facilitate the transfer.  

MWSC and FENAKA Corporation Limited have signed a Framework Agreement for the proposed transfer of water and sewerage services in Addu City, Addu Hulhudhoo, Addu Meedhoo and Fuvahmulah City to MWSC.

“Under this agreement, teams from both sides will visit the sites, inspect facilities, conduct surveys and carry out other necessary work,” he said. He added that he hopes MWSC will deliver improved services compared to what Fenaka previously provided.

Addu City, the country’s second most populous region with over 10,000 residents, has faced repeated water outages and contamination issues, prompting the government to waive water bills last November.

The government has now decided to dissolve Fenaka, transferring all electricity services to STELCO and all water and sewerage services to MWSC.
