Major overhaul of Hulhumale' track begins next month; new certified surface ready by January

A major project to rebuild the Hulhumale' Phase I athletics track to World -certified standards will begin on October 1, as the existing synthetic track has deteriorated significantly over the years.

The current track, installed during the administration of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, has suffered extensive damage. Frequent non-sporting events held on the surface and prolonged exposure to harmful conditions have contributed to its decline.

Speaking at the government-broadcast Ahaa Forum, Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu said the Government will implement a complete reconstruction of the facility. He said the entire synthetic surface and its underlying base will be fully removed and rebuilt using brand-new, internationally compliant materials.

According to the minister, renovation works will begin on October 1, and the new track is expected to be ready for use by January.

Rafiu said the biggest concern is that the existing Hulhumale' track does not meet World Athletics certification standards. Under World Athletics rules, any performance, whether a national record or a world record, is recognized only if achieved on a certified track that meets the association’s technical specifications.

As a result, strong performances and records set by Maldivian athletes on the current Hulhumale' track cannot be internationally recognized.
