President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said Monday that the government is working to reduce the number of teachers who are forced to work under extraordinary pressure by giving priority to their health and wellbeing.
In a message on the occasion of International Teachers’ Day, the President said teachers play an essential role in helping children navigate the rapid changes taking place in the world.
He noted the knowledge, hard work and lasting influence teachers have on young minds, expressing gratitude for their sacrifice and dedication to the country’s future. The President said it is the responsibility of the state to ensure teachers receive the support and environment needed to fulfil their important role effectively.
Highlighting the government’s objectives, the President said special priority will be given to improving teachers’ working conditions and strengthening inclusive education. He added that the government will work to enhance teachers’ capacity to support children with disabilities.
Teachers everywhere are helping young people navigate a rapidly changing world. On World Teachers’ Day, we honour their knowledge, dedication and the lasting influence they have on our young minds, and express our heartfelt gratitude for their service, sacrifice and commitment for the future of our nation. Our responsibility is to ensure that teachers have the support and conditions they need to perform their vital role effectively. This administration is committed to prioritising teacher wellbeing, reducing excessive workloads, improving working conditions, strengthening inclusive education, and expanding teacher capacity to support children with disabilities. When we support our teachers, we strengthen the foundation on which our children and our nation will grow. Let us continue to value the teaching profession, invest in our educators, and build an education system where every teacher has the support they need to help every child reach their full potential.

According to the President, supporting teachers strengthens the foundation of national development and children’s growth. UNESCO has chosen this year’s Teachers’ Day theme as “Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures,” marking the 60th anniversary of the 1966 UNESCO-ILO Convention on the Rights and Responsibilities of Teachers.
Statistics show that more than 11,000 teachers are currently serving in schools across the country, while the Ministry of Education is working to replace foreign teachers with Maldivians. The President concluded his message by calling for an education system that helps every child reach their full potential and urged continued appreciation and investment in the teaching profession.
