Australia Maldives Friendship Association (AMFA) and The Reading Room collaborated with Guraidhoo School to celebrate International Literacy Day and International Girl Child Day through a series of activities.

Guraidhoo School has 248 students from Grades 1 to 10, and all students from Grades 3 to 9 took part in the programme.

The event was graced by Sasha McGillion, Second Secretary at the Australian High Commission. In her address, she spoke extensively about the origins of International Girl Child Day at the United Nations, highlighting the reasons behind its establishment and outlining key rights afforded to girls. She also shared insights from her diplomatic work and experiences at Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).

To mark International Literacy Day, The Reading Room conducted special storytelling sessions aimed at fostering an interest in reading, particularly among students in Grades 3 to 7. AMFA said the activities enriched students’ knowledge and raised awareness on important issues, describing the programme as highly successful.
