A man who was speeding on the Sinamale’ Bridge highway was found to be in possession of drugs.

The arrest was made in the case of a 30-year-old man from N. Velidhoo. He was produced before the Criminal Court on Sunday and charged with drug use, possession and trafficking.

According to the court order, he was driving dangerously on the highway when police instructed him to stop. However, he refused to comply and crashed into a police barricade trying to get away.

The Investigation Officer (IO) told the court that police recovered eight rubber packets of suspected drugs from him.

According to the court order, he confessed to using drugs and said he was found with stuff he had gotten for himself, and claimed he was carrying only two rubber packets.

The Criminal Court remanded him in custody for 10 days, citing the risk he poses to public safety if released. The closure expires on November 11.

Police have increased efforts to curb dangerous driving and accidents in the city, while also conducting operations targeting drug-related offences.
