The island of Meedhoo in Addu Atoll celebrated its first-ever Decentralization Day on Thursday, marking the first anniversary of the establishment of its independent local council.

In October last year, a public referendum was held to gauge support for establishing separate councils for Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo, independent of the Addu City Council. The results showed overwhelming support on both islands for autonomous local governance.

To mark the milestone, a special ceremony was held in Meedhoo on Thursday, featuring an initiative to honor the island’s former leaders. Former island chiefs (Katheebs) and councilors were invited to a portrait-hanging ceremony in the Meedhoo Council meeting room. Family members represented leaders who had passed away or no longer resided on the island.

Speaking at the event, Council President Ahmed Shathir said the decision to display portraits of individuals who had served and made significant contributions to the island across different eras was aimed at preserving their legacy for future generations. He added that the council was also working to publish detailed profiles of these leaders on its official website.

Shathir further noted that a dedicated committee on Meedhoo’s history and culture had been established as part of efforts to ensure that such important information was accurately passed on to future generations.

During the ceremony, Meedhoo’s official anthem was also unveiled. Shathir explained that the council considered it essential to have a dedicated anthem for promotional activities and official ceremonies. The anthem was performed by local artist Aminath Naufa.

Former leaders who attended the ceremony expressed their happiness at the progress made and the promising future they envisioned for Meedhoo as an independent council.

Members of the Meedhoo Council reaffirmed their commitment to working alongside the Council President to secure a prosperous and safe future for the island and its residents.

The Meedhoo Council has decided to mark the anniversary of its establishment as an independent body with major events every year.
