The National Meteorological Agency (MET) has issued a statement regarding viral social media posts claiming that an earthquake is expected to hit Maldives in the coming days.
A social media page named State of Maldives posted that a magnitude 5.2 earthquake would strike the country within the next few days. MET, in response, said that while scientists can identify regions where earthquakes are more likely to occur over long periods, there is no scientific method to predict earthquakes beforehand.
The agency stressed that there is no verified scientific way to determine the exact date, time, location, or magnitude of a future earthquake.

MET said it continuously monitors global earthquake information and will immediately share verified updates if any seismic event occurs. The agency typically issues public information when earthquakes occur near Maldives and clarifies whether the country will be affected in any way.
